Bay Wheels is the Bay Area’s premier bikeshare system, and one of the largest in the nation. Get access to thousands of bikes and see public transit schedules around you in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, and San Jose. Best of all, it’s available 24/7.Bay Wheels consists of a fleet of specially-designed, sturdy, and durable electric bikes that can be accessed throughout the Bay Area, as well as classic bikes that are locked into a network of docking stations in Bay Area cities. Our bikes can be unlocked from one station and returned to any other station in the system, making them ideal for one-way trips. Bikeshare is a greener, healthier way to get around — whether you’re commuting, running errands, meeting friends, or exploring in a new city.
The Bay wheels App gives you access to thousands of bikes in your area — unlock and pay directly from the app and get going. You can also get walking directions and see public transit schedules to help you easily get to bike stations.
The Bay Wheels App also shows public transit departures, including BART trains, Caltrain rail lines, the Tamien-San Jose shuttle, MUNI buses, MUNI Metro light rail, MUNI cable cars, MUNI trolleys, AC Transit Local & Transbay buses, VTA light rail, VTA Local buses, VTA Rapid buses, VTA Express buses, VTA ACE shuttles, Golden Gate Ferries, Sonoma County Buses, Sonoma County connectors & shuttles, SF Bay Ferries, the Angel Isl. Bike angels points change relative to zoom levels of the map. Either background refresh is not working, or there are two datasets displayed depending on the zoom level. Unrelated tip: add road height as darkness of route color to easily differentiate easy to pedal routes (non electric) vs hard to pedal routes (that would benefit of electric). Should increase usage of non electric bikes. Should also provide data to you guys to know what stations need what kinds of bikes.

It was fine until the company removed all phone numbers from the app and forced us to use forms. They never respond with anything other than an auto reply. I was nearly hit by a car and when I called (this was before they removed the phone numbers) they left me on hold for nearly 30 minutes. They have also recently jacked prices without any specifics, leading to my auto renewal conveniently being processed just too soon for me to cancel without losing my money. Caveat emptor.

Will never use again. Needed to get across town and one of these bikes seemed like a good option. There were a few stations near my destination and $3 seemed very reasonable. Well the app wouldnt work on my phone so i had to pay $10 at the booth. When i got to my destination all of the nearby stations were full and the closet station with an open spot was nearly back where i started. Save yourself time, money, and headache and take a bus.

Fun every once in a while, impractical for daily use. Take the bus. I hoped to use this for a cleaner way to commute. But it ended up being more expensive, more dangerous, and slower than just hopping on the bus. Example: I took a 1.5 mile ride and walked the extra .2 miles to my final destination (since you must park the bike at an approved station) for a total of 17 min and it cost me $8. The bus costs only $2.50 and takes 15 minutes total.

I've never had a single bad experience with Bay Wheels. The bikes have always been in at least workable condition (sometimes the seats are a bit loose, the bell doesn't work, etc.). The app is simple but very intuitive and functional. The price for a monthly hip is incredibly reasonable. There really are bike stations everywhere, and I've never yet needed to go to another station to find a bike or find a dock to park my bike. The freedom Bay Wheels gives me is worth every penny!

The app seems robust and does what it's supposed to do: a quick scan on the bike and start riding. The reason for the 3 stars is the cost of the rental and maintenance of the bikes. About a year ago, in 2022 I rented a bike and rode across half the city for like $5. A year later I paid $10 to peddle from the Ferry Building to 4th and King, about 1.5 miles. That might be more expensive than an Uber or a bus. And on half the bikes, the battery packs were non-functional to boot. Very bad.

The app itself is mediocre. QR scanner works about 1/3 of the time. When it does, the app shows an error message even though the bike gets released. Broken bikes are included in the # of available bikes at a station. The bikes are generally ok, definitely better than they used to be. Cancelled my subscription after a malfunctioning dock released a bike I had returned and Bay wheels was holding me responsible for the bike being out. Customer service was completely unhelpful.

I enjoy this service mostly for pedal bikes(which are greatly outnumbered by ebikes now). The pedal bikes are often usable but pretty worn with chain skips or ground gears creating a wobbly ride with little power output - check the chain and saddle before riding. Some of this could be prevented by investing in lower maintenance design(internal gear hub, belt drive, Dutch style safety features). The ebikes are quite good but also priced above what I'm happy with.
